A Little Rant

This is a little rant on Sethe and her actions in the novel Beloved. Sethe supposedly attempted to kill her children for the noble cause of saving her children from slavery, but in the long run all she ended up doing was ostracizing her family in her neighborhood. Nobody really gained anything from Sethe’s actions. Denver tried to get an education and make friends with the other children in her neighborhood, but the neighbors found out that next door a murderer was living. Denver never went back to “shool” because she felt so shamed. Howard and Buglar were so scared of their mother that they ran away to be killed in the Civil War, and they never let go of each other’s hands. Baby Suggs died, ultimately, because there was no more color in her life. But Sethe went on living like nothing was wrong, her courageous actions were selfish.
