Blog 12

In Chapter 15 of Into the Wild, I grew more and more to dislike Krakauer. The way he desired and longed for a cigarette just disgusted me. Smoking is the worst vice a person can have, in my mind. I mostly have that perspective on smoking, because of the affects of second-hand smoking. How innocent children can become eternally scarred by the poor decisions of strangers addicted to smoking. Smoking is just not very attractive. The way the cigarette stains the tips of the fingers and causes the lungs to fall apart and to become no longer functional. I still remember the presentation in my freshmen health class, where men that had their respiratory system permanently destroyed by smoking in their youth came and basically told us to not smoke, because then you will end up having a hole in your throat. Smoking just disgusts me, and gives me a bad perception of Krakauer. Another action of Krakauer that further degrades my view of him is his drinking habits. I have a fear of drunks from past experiences with intoxicated people. Drunks just creeps me out, so when I read that Krakauer spent several hours at a bar it just gave me more reason to dislike him as a person. I still respect him as an author, though, because of his ability to write this biography with such vivid and descriptive language that I can see McCandless and his life playing like a film in my mind.
