I would like to talk about the character Ron Franz, the “devout Christian.” He really attracted my attention when he decided to renounce his relationship with GOD. I sympathize with his anger towards GOD for the death of a loved one, because I have been in that position. When I was in the seventh grade I lost a friend to bicycle accident (she was not wearing a helmet, the bike had faulty brakes, and she was heading down a steep hill; it was a recipe for disaster). I too felt anger towards GOD, who is often conveyed as passionate and loving, for taking away my friend. During this tough time I asked a friend at church, “Why does GOD let such pain and suffering happen? What did I do to deserve this?” My friend is wise and gave me an answer that I will never ever forget, “Because of sin. Because Eve let in the original sin. It is our own fault for our own suffering.” After she gave me that answer, I felt so dumb, because that is such an obvious answer. It’s like when Pandora opened the infamous box. Because Pandora opened up the box – like when Eve took a bite of the forbidden fruit – she let a whole bunch of terrible things into the world – just like how Eve let a whole bunch of sin into the world. I think Franz acted rashly, but it was his choice. If only he had prayed and asked GOD, “Why?” then maybe Franz could have been saved from rash decision.
